The world of medicine is constantly changing and evolving, which requires physicians and advanced practice providers to stay up to date and knowledgeable about their practice and specialty. One way to do that – and distinguish yourself from other physicians –  is through researching and writing content for other physicians and knowledge sharing.

Getting started

Regardless of whether you want to make a career out of writing medical content or just want some experience, there are a few ways to get started:

  • Social media – Practice creating original content by commenting on articles and peers’ posts and sharing your own thoughts and ideas on your social platforms. This can help you get comfortable publishing original pieces, while giving you the opportunity to receive feedback from personal and professional connections.
  • Presentations –Contact organizations and regional medical and specialty societies to introduce yourself, share the topics you research, and offer to present at an upcoming event or meeting.
  • Reviews – Read journals and published content to write review or blog articles you can also publish. This is a great way to start since the article is already published and you just evaluate it.

Developing content

Producing medical content can be as large and official as contributing to textbooks, reference materials and journals or as small and simple as writing a blog or recording a homegrown podcast.

Before you start writing, you’ll need to research not only the content of the article, but also the current guidelines on formatting and writing health care subject matter.

Some companies may request content and suggest what should go into the article, but in other cases, you might be able to write about a topic of your choice.

Promoting your talents

Include your published work on your CV and don’t be afraid to share samples when requested or asked. Your experience in writing and increasing your knowledge in your field will help you stand out among other candidates. It shows you have a passion for your specialty and career and continue to learn and keep yourself up to date about the industry. The research and effort can also help you in your practice and make you a better physician because of your increased understanding.
