PracticeLink recently hosted a panel of physician recruiters to get their take on what’s important in their search for the right candidate. Residents, fellows, NPs/PAs, and even practicing physicians can benefit from what they had to say.
We’ve captured some of their tips and suggestions here:
Perfect your CV and cover letter
- Tailor your CV and cover letter to the job you’re applying for.
- There are no absolute rules but, in general, the length of your CV depends on your profession. For example, clinical CVs tend to be shorter, while academic CVs are typically longer in length.
- Stay on top of your CV and make sure it’s up to date.
- Focus the content of your CV on your career objective, highlights of your career to date, education and major skills and accomplishments.
Find work/life balance
- Think through what you really want in a practice. What type of practice environment do you want to work in?
- Visualize your ideal life – What’s most important to you? Is it pay? Is it an urban setting or rural setting?
- Get your spouse involved. Finding the best fit involves everyone in your family.
Network and communicate
- Physician recruiters are doing their homework. Social media can be a powerful networking tool when used judiciously. Keep things tasteful and tactful.
- Follow-up on jobs you’ve applied for. If you don’t get a response within a week to ten days, email or call to make sure your application was received.
- Make a connection through mutual acquaintances, friends, and colleagues in the industry and use them as references.
