What surprised you about your first post- residency job?

I was surprised about how complex it is to code, bill and receive payment from third-party payers. I was pleasantly surprised by the potential income increase but disappointed about the taxes I would be paying and that I would not be able to afford the homes I saw plastic and orthopedic surgeons live in.

What’s your advice for residents beginning their job search?

Be confident about your knowledge and value to your employer. Make sure you see yourself in the same job in the next five years. Be vigilant about your practice environment and team up with your administrator to improve patient care and employee satisfaction. You must also do your homework about the practice, check online reviews and other sources of information, know a little about the partners’ biographies.
